Integrated Smart Lighting and Personnel Positioning Project for the Coal Plant

I. Project Overview

Project Name: Integrated Intelligent Lighting and Personnel Positioning System for the Shaanxi Xiaobaodang Coal Mine Coal Preparation Plant

Client: Shaanxi Xiaobaodang Coal Mine Coal Preparation Plant

Project duration: 3 months

Project Objective: To address the challenges of personnel safety management and energy conservation and emission reduction in coal preparation plants, and to advance the intelligent development of safety management in mining areas.

II. Project Background

(1) Rising Industry Standards

China’s requirements for coal mine safety production are becoming increasingly stringent, making the upgrade and renovation of the coal mine system’s “Six Major Systems” urgently necessary. The personnel positioning system must be upgraded from area-based positioning to precise positioning to better ensure worker safety.

(II) Prominent Industry Pain Points

The coal industry is a high‑energy‑consumption sector, facing formidable challenges in energy conservation and emissions reduction. The coal preparation plant at the Xiaobaodang Mine in Shaanxi covers an area of 400,000 square meters and employs over 500 workers. Its coal‑processing operations are complex and conducted in harsh environmental conditions, with significant risks to personnel safety. Meanwhile, the facility houses approximately 3,000 high‑power lighting fixtures both indoors and outdoors, presenting substantial potential for energy savings and emission reductions.

III. Project Implementation Plan

Implementation phaseSpecific content
Integrated Design of Smart Lighting and UWB-Based Personnel PositioningLuminaires that integrate UWB positioning technology with intelligent lighting control technology seamlessly combine UWB positioning Base Stations with lighting fixtures, achieving an integrated design and laying the groundwork for future functionality.
On-site wireless coverageBy upgrading lighting fixtures with smart technology, Wi‑Fi coverage has been extended throughout the entire coal preparation plant, ensuring stable and reliable wireless connectivity to support data transmission for personnel positioning and intelligent lighting control.
Smart Lighting RetrofitThe plant’s 3,000 high‑power lighting fixtures have been upgraded with smart technology, enabling intelligent control and location‑tracking capabilities to enhance both operational efficiency and energy utilization.
Deployment of personnel-worn locatorsMore than 500 employees at the plant are equipped with wearable locators that utilize UWB technology, achieving positioning accuracy of 10 to 30 centimeters and enabling precise tracking of their locations.

IV. Functional Applications and Outcomes

(1) Intelligent Lighting Management

FunctionalityDescriptionEffectiveness
The light turns on when someone arrives and off when they leave.Using personnel‑location data, the lighting system automatically controls the on/off status: lights turn on when someone enters a zone and switch off automatically when the area is vacated. The plant’s lighting energy consumption has been reduced by more than 30%, effectively advancing energy conservation and emissions reduction efforts.
Planned lighting, on-demand lightingLighting schedules can be pre-configured to meet the specific needs of different time periods and areas, enabling demand‑based illumination.Improve the utilization efficiency of lighting resources and reduce unnecessary energy waste.

(II) Personnel Security Management

FunctionalityDescriptionEffectiveness
Real-time personnel positioningManagers can use the management platform to view employees’ precise locations within the factory premises in real time, enabling them to track workforce activity. This facilitates timely staff deployment and enhances production management efficiency.
Track PlaybackThe system can record employees’ historical movement paths, facilitating accident investigation and liability determination.Provide a solid basis for safety management and reduce disputes arising from safety incidents.
Regional Population StatisticsReal-time statistics on the number of people in each area, with alerts triggered when the count exceeds the safety threshold. It helps to optimize workforce allocation and mitigate safety risks associated with excessive personnel concentration.
Danger Zone Intrusion AlarmAn electronic fence is deployed in hazardous areas; when an employee enters without authorization, the system immediately triggers an audible and visual alarm and notifies management.Effectively prevent safety accidents and ensure the safety of employees’ lives.
Urgent HelpThe location trackers worn by employees are equipped with a one‑button emergency call feature; when the button is pressed, the system promptly sends an alert to the management console and displays the wearer’s location.Ensure that employees can receive timely assistance in emergency situations.

Through the implementation of this project, the coal preparation plant at the Xiaobaodang Coal Mine in Shaanxi has successfully addressed challenges related to personnel safety management and energy conservation and emission reduction in lighting, thereby advancing the intelligent development of safety management within the mining area and providing valuable insights for the sustainable development of the coal mining industry.
