Yulin City Neuropsychiatric Hospital Personnel Precision Location Project
Project Overview
The medical institution supporting this project boasts a rich historical legacy and plays a vital social role. Originally established as the Yulin City Neuropsychiatric Hospital, it has long served as a cornerstone of mental health care in the region. Through years of development and transformation, it has evolved into the Yulin City Mental Health Center and the Municipal Compulsory Treatment Center, integrating prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and compulsory medical care under one roof. As the central pillar of Yulin’s mental health services, it has made an indelible contribution to safeguarding the psychological well-being of residents and maintaining social stability.
The center is located in Yuyang District, Yulin City, enjoying a superior geographical location and convenient transportation. Surrounded by a quiet and pleasant environment, it provides psychiatric patients with a relatively comfortable setting conducive to treatment and rehabilitation. At present, the center undertakes the critical task of precisely locating 40 psychiatric patients. These patients vary in their conditions: some have more severe symptoms and require close monitoring of their movements, while others pose certain potential risks and must be kept within secure, supervised areas. By implementing the positioning system outlined in this project, we aim to offer these patients safer, more effective management and oversight, while also greatly facilitating the work of medical staff.

Implementation Plan
To achieve precise location tracking of 40 psychiatric patients, this project employs advanced Bluetooth-based indoor–outdoor positioning technology. Leveraging its advantages—low power consumption, high accuracy, and ease of deployment—this technology has been selected as the preferred solution for the project’s localization system.
In terms of on-site deployment, the first step is to install the Bluetooth gateways. Based on the layout of the central building and patients’ movement patterns, these gateways are strategically positioned at key locations—such as patient rooms, corridors, common areas, and entrances and exits—to ensure comprehensive coverage. Acting as signal‑receiving stations, the gateways continuously capture Bluetooth signals emitted by patients’ wearable devices and forward them to the backend management system. During installation, technicians carefully evaluate signal coverage and strength to guarantee stable, reliable transmission throughout the entire facility, thereby eliminating signal blind spots.
For each patient, a specially designed, tamper‑proof wristband will be provided. In addition to its stylish and comfortable design, the wristband integrates a Bluetooth positioning module along with other relevant functional components. Once worn, the wristband continuously emits a Bluetooth signal, communicating with nearby Bluetooth gateways. Leveraging advanced positioning algorithms, the backend management system can accurately determine the patient’s location. In indoor settings, the system can pinpoint the patient to a specific room, enabling healthcare staff to track which ward the patient is resting in or which treatment room they are receiving care in. In public areas such as corridors, positioning accuracy reaches 3–5 meters—sufficient to meet the need for real-time monitoring of patient movement, ensuring that patients do not enter hazardous or unauthorized zones.
Functional Applications
- Real-time location tracking : This is one of the most basic yet crucial functions of the Positioning System. Medical staff can use the backend management system to view the real-time location information of 40 psychiatric patients at any time. Whether in the office, at the nurses’ station, or elsewhere, simply logging into the system allows them to clearly track each patient’s movements, significantly enhancing work efficiency and the precision of patient management. For example, when medication needs to be administered to a particular patient, medical staff can quickly locate the patient’s room and deliver the medication promptly, thereby preventing delays in treatment.
- Boundary Crossing Alarm To ensure patient safety, the system is equipped with an electronic fence feature. Healthcare staff can define specific activity zones for each patient based on their clinical condition and treatment needs. If a patient ventures beyond the designated area, the system immediately triggers an out-of-bounds alert, notifying the relevant medical personnel. This alert can take various forms—such as audible alarms, text messages, or pop-up notifications on the system interface—ensuring that staff are promptly informed and can respond accordingly. For instance, patients with severe conditions who exhibit aggressive behavior or suicidal tendencies may be confined to their rooms and designated activity areas; should they attempt to leave these zones, the system will swiftly issue an alarm, helping to prevent adverse incidents.
- Trajectory Query The system automatically records a patient’s movement trajectory over a specified period. Healthcare professionals can, as needed, query the patient’s walking routes and locations at any given time. By analyzing these movement patterns, clinicians can gain deeper insights into the patient’s behavioral habits and psychological state, providing robust evidence to inform the development of personalized treatment plans. For example, if a patient is observed spending excessive time in a particular area, healthcare providers can investigate whether that location holds special significance for the patient and adjust the treatment strategy accordingly.
- Vital signs monitoring The tamper‑proof wristband also incorporates vital‑signs monitoring, enabling real-time collection of key parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen saturation, and transmitting this data to a backend management system. Healthcare staff can monitor patients’ vital signs at any time, and the system will promptly issue alerts upon detecting abnormalities, prompting immediate intervention. This capability is crucial for early identification of patient discomfort and prevention of sudden medical events, thereby providing robust protection for patients’ health and safety.
- Report of forced demolition : Considering the special circumstances of psychiatric patients, the wristband features a tamper-proof design. If a patient attempts to forcibly remove the wristband, the system will immediately trigger a strong‑tamper alarm. This function effectively prevents patients from deliberately sabotaging the positioning device, ensuring the normal operation of the Positioning System, while also providing healthcare professionals with crucial clues to promptly detect patients’ abnormal behaviors.
Through the detailed introductions of the project overview, implementation plan, and functional applications above, it is evident that this project aims to build a comprehensive, efficient, and reliable psychiatric patient location management system, providing robust Technical Support for patient management at the Yulin Municipal Mental Health Center and further enhancing the quality of medical services and the level of safety management.
