China Tower Group Zhengzhou Metro – Tunnel Construction Personnel Positioning
China Tower Site Connectivity Project – Metro Tunnel Pilot Project Case Study
I. Project Background
As urbanization accelerates, subway construction has become a key measure for alleviating urban traffic congestion and enhancing the efficiency of city operations. However, subway tunnel construction takes place in complex environments with relatively confined spaces, posing numerous safety risks and management challenges. To improve safety management and operational efficiency in subway tunnel projects, China Tower launched the “Gongdi Tong Project—Subway Tunnel Pilot Initiative.” The project selected a roughly 1-kilometer-long, two-way tunnel as its pilot site. This tunnel presents a highly intricate construction environment, requiring the coordinated execution of multiple work processes and accommodating frequent, dense personnel movements, thereby placing exceptionally high demands on worker safety management and precise scheduling. To ensure the safety of 100 construction workers and achieve efficient management, the adoption of advanced positioning technologies has become an indispensable solution.
II. Project Overview
The China Tower Construction Site Connectivity Project’s subway tunnel pilot focuses on providing precise positioning and management for construction workers within a roughly 1-kilometer-long, two-way tunnel. The tunnel’s working environment is particularly challenging, with inadequate lighting and signal blockages, posing significant obstacles to personnel tracking. By leveraging advanced positioning technologies, the project aims to monitor the real-time locations of 100 workers inside the tunnel, thereby ensuring construction safety, enhancing operational efficiency, and enabling intelligent, data‑driven construction management.
III. Implementation Plan
(1) Selection of the Positioning System
By adopting a Bluetooth-based Precision Positioning System, which boasts advantages such as low power consumption, high accuracy, and flexible deployment, this system is ideally suited for construction scenarios like subway tunnels—relatively enclosed spaces with complex environmental conditions. Even under signal‑limited conditions, it can maintain stable positioning performance, providing construction personnel with reliable location services.
(II) On-site Equipment Deployment
At the tunnel site, Bluetooth Beacons are wirelessly deployed. Based on the tunnel’s layout, the workers’ activity areas, and signal coverage requirements, technicians scientifically plan the Beacons’ locations and quantities. The Beacons are installed at key positions such as the tunnel walls and ceiling, creating a dense and stable signal network that ensures seamless Bluetooth signal coverage throughout the entire tunnel area.
(3) Personnel Positioning Equipment Provisioning
Each construction worker is equipped with a helmet-mounted Beacon. This Beacon is ingeniously designed to integrate seamlessly with the helmet, ensuring it does not interfere with the worker’s normal tasks while enabling real-time collection and transmission of location data. The Beacon features a built-in Bluetooth module that communicates with nearby Bluetooth Beacons, accurately sending its position data to the backend management system.
(4) Positioning Accuracy Assurance
By leveraging advanced positioning algorithms and signal-processing techniques, the system achieves a positioning accuracy within 5 meters. This level of precision meets the practical requirements of tunnel construction management, enabling supervisors to accurately track the precise locations of workers and carry out timely scheduling and command.
IV. Functional Applications
(1) Precise Personnel Targeting
The backend management system can display the precise locations of 100 construction workers inside the tunnel in real time. Through a computer or mobile device, managers can visually monitor the distribution of each worker. In the event of an emergency, the system can quickly pinpoint the location of trapped personnel, buying valuable time for rescue operations.
(II) Hierarchical Map Presentation
The system supports hierarchical map visualization, allowing administrators to select and view maps at different levels as needed. From a high-level overview of the tunnel’s overall layout to detailed zoomed-in views of specific construction zones, the system clearly displays the location information of construction personnel, facilitating comprehensive management and dispatch.
(3) Data Statistics Reports
The system automatically collects and analyzes location data for construction personnel, generating a variety of statistical reports, such as attendance reports, activity‑trajectory reports, and area‑stay‑time reports. These reports provide management with detailed insights into workforce activities, helping to assess construction efficiency, optimize staffing levels, and inform data‑driven managerial decision‑making.
(4) Electronic Fence
To ensure construction safety, the system is equipped with an electronic fence feature. Based on project requirements, management personnel can delineate safe zones and hazardous areas within the tunnel. When workers enter a hazardous zone or an unauthorized area, the system immediately triggers an alarm, alerting both workers and supervisors to prioritize safety and prevent accidents.
(5) Patrol Inspection Management
For equipment inspection tasks within tunnels, the system provides an inspection management function. Administrators can create inspection schedules, define inspection routes, and designate inspection points. Once inspectors wear a positioning device, the system records their inspection paths and timestamps in real time, ensuring that inspections are carried out according to plan and enhancing both efficiency and quality.
Through the implementation of the China Tower “Gongdi Tong” project’s subway tunnel pilot, the safety management level and efficiency of subway tunnel construction have been effectively enhanced, providing valuable experience and reference for the construction management of similar projects.
